A family member or caregiver may be able to ride with a private-pay NEMT passenger, but the provider must confirm the vehicle, space, mobility equipment and safety plan first. Include every passenger in the booking request so the quote and pickup plan match the actual ride.

Why does the extra passenger matter?

The passenger count affects the vehicle layout and the space available for a wheelchair, walker, bags or other equipment. It can also change who is expected to help at pickup and at the receiving destination.

What should you tell the provider?

  • The number of adults and children riding.
  • Whether the caregiver needs a seat during the trip.
  • Whether the passenger remains in a wheelchair or transfers into a vehicle seat.
  • Whether the caregiver will assist with medication, paperwork or communication.
  • Whether a facility, hospital or clinic has visitor rules at pickup or arrival.

When is a caregiver especially helpful?

A caregiver can help communicate the passenger's preferences, bring appointment information, coordinate with the facility and support the rider after arrival. The transportation provider should still understand exactly what physical assistance is requested and what the crew can provide.

How should you plan the handoff?

  1. Name the person who will meet the passenger at pickup and the destination.
  2. Share phone numbers for the caregiver and the facility contact.
  3. Confirm whether the provider is taking the passenger to the door, reception area or another agreed point.
  4. Ask what happens if the caregiver is delayed or the facility is not ready.
