Choosing the right ride

What is non-emergency medical transportation?

NEMT is scheduled transportation for a passenger who needs a mobility-matched ride to a medical appointment, treatment, discharge destination or facility but does not need emergency response.

Is a wheelchair van the same as stretcher transportation?

No. A wheelchair van is for a passenger who can remain seated and secured. Stretcher transportation is for a passenger who must travel lying flat or cannot safely use a seated vehicle.

Compare wheelchair and stretcher transportation

Can a wheelchair stay occupied during medical transportation?

A passenger may be able to remain in a wheelchair in a compatible accessible vehicle. The chair type, size, passenger position and securement plan must be confirmed before booking.

What is the difference between door-to-door and curb-to-curb NEMT?

Curb-to-curb service starts and ends at an accessible pickup point. Door-to-door or door-through-door assistance may involve more building and handoff coordination, so define the exact assistance before booking.

Can a caregiver ride with a private-pay NEMT passenger?

A caregiver may be able to ride along, but the provider needs to confirm vehicle space, mobility equipment, passenger count and the handoff plan before booking.

Booking, quotes and timing

What questions should I ask a private-pay NEMT provider?

Ask about vehicle fit, passenger assistance, the quote assumptions, waiting and cancellation policies, day-of communication, service area and what happens if the appointment changes.

Use the provider question checklist

How do I compare private-pay medical transportation quotes?

Compare route, vehicle, passenger assistance, pickup timing, waiting, extra stops, one-way or round-trip assumptions and cancellation terms—not only the advertised price.

Compare quotes step by step

How far in advance should I book private-pay medical transportation?

Book as soon as the appointment, discharge or recurring schedule is known. Earlier planning gives the provider more time to confirm the vehicle, route, timing and facility handoff.

Plan booking timing

Can I request same-day or weekend private-pay NEMT?

A same-day or weekend request may be possible, but availability depends on vehicle, crew, route and timing. Submit complete passenger and trip details and ask the provider to confirm.

How much does private-pay medical transportation cost?

A private-pay quote depends on route, vehicle type, passenger needs, timing, waiting, extra stops and whether the ride is one-way, round-trip or recurring. Request a trip-specific quote.

Private pay, insurance and emergencies

Is private pay always better than insurance transportation?

No. Insurance transportation can be useful when the benefit and assigned vehicle fit the passenger. Private pay may be a better fit when provider choice, timing, vehicle type or direct communication matters most.

When should I call 911 instead of booking NEMT?

Call 911 for a medical emergency, a sudden serious change or a situation needing immediate help. NEMT is scheduled transportation and is not an emergency medical response service.

Read the ambulance vs. NEMT guide

Does Medicaid transportation replace an ambulance?

No. Transportation benefits and ambulance services are different. Coverage and authorization rules vary, while an emergency should be handled through 911 or the patient's emergency instructions.

Understand the NEMT boundary

Scheduled NEMT is not emergency response. For a medical emergency or sudden serious change, call 911 or follow the passenger's emergency instructions.
